My wife and a family friend went to check-out minivans last week as we are upgrading from our Highlander to a minivan. We've recently relocated to the area and know that there are many car-buying options. My wife went to check-out Toyota of Portsmouth out of convenience of location to our new home and employer. At their visit, they were greeted by Frank, who was extremely unprofessional and condescending. My wife said she was interested in seeing a minivan. They walked all the way out to the parking lot and he told her that she could "just look" at the mini-vans from the outside, as he didn't have any of the keys to the cars. As he probed and asked my wife questions he proceeded to steer my wife to cheaper vehicles, assuming we couldn't afford the cars, reminding her multiple times that "you know that these are 50k vehicles." "Do you even have a job," was another utterance out of this salesperson. We laugh about the experience now as we have steered our sights to another local Toyota dealership. I am shocked that in 2017, gender issues can still be this pervasive at this dealership. Your inadequacy, prejudice and unprofessionalism is your loss and our gain.

    Response from the owner

It is routine at any dealership to ask about employment and budget. It helps us determine what is right for you. We don't want to sell someone a vehicle they can't afford. There must be a reason Dealerator and Cars.com rate us as the highest rated Toyota dealer on the Seacoast. And Frank has many satisfied customers as you can see on our Testimonial page. https://www.toyotaofportsmouth.com/dealership/testimonials.htm Please contact us with your concerns. We would like to hear from you.

Way better than Epping, NH, but does not come close to my home dealership in Avondale, AZ. Service is friendly but often rushed. maintenance done missed basic things and details normally standard. Sales lacked follow-through and there seemed to be a gap in communication between sales and maintenance. Still better than many other dealerships I've been to.

    Response from the owner

Thank you for your review and welcome to New England. We work hard to make sure every experience is it's best. But as with any business there is always room for improvement. I bought my first ever "New Car" from them back in 2010. The atmosphere was super pleasant, everyone was nice and extremely helpful. I got, what I felt, was a fair deal on the new car. They paid off my old car (which I was upside-down on), gave me a service and warranty upgrade for free, and had me out the door within a 2 hours with my new car. Summer of 2014 I was ready to trade in my ride for something new. I brought it here first, as I had a pleasant experience in the past. First thing I noticed was the lack of staff compared to my first visit, and they didnt seem as friendly. I was given a great trade in offer for my car, but they would not budge an inch from the sticker price of the new car (which was a lot higher than the cars actual value). Thats a great tactic I guess, offer me a nice trade offer, and then sell me a car at sticker price. Needless to say, I walked. I decided to give them another try very recently, with the same car as a trade in. Again, short staffed, and not very friendly. I had seen an enticing lease deal on their website for X amount down and X amount a month. When I showed them what I wanted, ofcourse they told me they didnt have that car in stock, and tried to push a more expensive one on me. They also low-balled me on my trade in, dropping several thousand dollars from their offer no more than 3 or 4 months ago. Again, no willingness to budge on sticker price for anything. Then they tell me they can order the truck I saw, but then raised the down payment and monthly payment on me. Nice bait and switch move. That was enough for me. I had to pleasant time on my first visit, however, these last 2 visits are enough to make me take my business elsewhere.

    Response from the owner

Joe, We apologize for the experience you've gone thru. We have put our sales consultants thru much more training since you were in and we have hired new managers to replace those who weren't getting the job done right. It's a brand new dealership these days and we invite you back when it come time for a new Toyota. Toyota of Portsmouth

Today I went for an appointment that I scheduled online few days ago in order to set up the auto starter in my car. I created a customer account online which provided the dealership the type of car I owned and my recent car history. The appointment was made online and according to the representatives it did not got communicated between departments (not my problem). My experience was great when I came in and 2 sales people helped me out, one of them said my car was going to start its process and I just waited in the room doing my homework because yes I am a busy person too. After 30 minutes, the sales representative who I bought my car with, came and said hello and told me if I called them for the appointment. I said no, but I got a text message confirming and stating that I just need to call in order to cancel it. Luckily I had the text and they saw it. When he directed me to the person in charge of something (i don't know his name and title), was obviously in a bad mood and treated me the entire time like it was my fault for using the channels they have available for its customers. The guy was so condescending and I had such a bad time understanding if it was my fault or not. I just wanted my car back and get out of that place. His words were "let's schedule another appointment, when do you have time, we will call you next week or whatever" WHATEVER?? really?? Please do not make any appointments online, call directly and hopefully someone nice will help you out. I am not going back to that dealership and I want to make it clear that I am not expecting anything for free. It just frustrates me because I also work in customer service and I am required to go above and beyond with my customers and not receiving the same treatment is very disappointing. I am going to find a different place where I can feel more valuable as a customer. Thanks!

    Response from the owner

Natalia, We can see how frustrating this must have been. No one wants to go thru that kind of experience. Since your visit there have been many changes. We've updated our online scheduler, we've hired a Service Coordinator and we have a new Service Manager. These changes have had a significant impact on our customer service. We invite you back to meet our new people and experience the changes. Toyota of Portsmouth

Super friendly staff who went above and beyond to get the vehicle I wanted. Did not have in stock the color or options of vehicle I wanted, but within two days they found one and had it ready at the dealership. Frank and Dan were great to deal with. Go see them if your buying a new or used Toyota.

    Response from the owner

Thank you for the great review. We look forward to working with you again. Toyota of Portsmouth

I first worked with Toyota of Portsmouth and Jim Belmer two years ago on a lease of a 2013 Toyota Rav4. Jim was great to deal with! He was well versed on the car and its features and he reviewed all of my options with me without any pressure. I have continued to have my car serviced at Toyota since. Each time I have brought my car in for routine maintenance, the service department has been great, they were pleasant and quick. Just recently I stopped back into the dealership to talk with Jim about a new lease deal. Jim once again took the time to review my options and even followed up with more details after I left the dealership. Jim has gone above and beyond to provide excellent service to me. I would recommend Toyota of Portsmouth and Jim Belmer to anyone looking to lease or buy.

I worked with Josh in service and he was very helpful. the organization as a whole is great. I will be honest, I didn't use them to service my vehicle but they helped in an unbiased manner to support what was best for me, the customer. I have high regard for this organization and will continue to use them as needed.

Very unprofessional stuff. Made a reservation to rent the car with them. Noone ever reached out to me and I wasn't able to talk to rental person because he was on the another call. Hire people who want to work.

    Response from the owner

Thank you for the feedback, Savo. Yes we did get your reservation online, but would need to talk with you to complete it. Nic, our rental manager, did not get a message or voicemail that you called. This is certainly not the type of experience we expect for our customers, and we will be speaking with our team about your comments. If there's anything else about your visit that you'd like to discuss, please feel free to contact me directly. Todd Page - Assistant GM - 603-431-6100

I'm sharing this from my review on Facebook- Being a former salesman, I was expecting at least a small portion of respect, which I did not find at Toyota of Portsmouth. I can promise you that they are the single highest priced Toyota dealership in the region. I left Toyota of Portsmouth about a year ago, and about a month ago bought a Rav4. And Even for someone who was "friends" with the workers there, they still treated me like a blank check, and I know that they will treat you this way too. If you're looking at used, there are many similar vehicles in the area at competing dealers, do not buy from anywhere without checking others first. This was a huge stumbling block for me at Toyota of Portsmouth because we could never even match prices, we always came out higher. If you're looking for new cars, PLEASE check with Dube, Hurlbert or any other dealership in the area I guarantee that they will give you a better deal. Trust me!! I say this for the same reason I stopped selling cars, I care about people and I wish nobody would have to pay Thousands of dollars more for a vehicle than necessary.

    Response from the owner

Hey Isaac, From what I've been told, they treated you very fair when you came in on this RAV4.  Being a past employee who left for your own reasons, you were able to do what you wanted with keys and a test drive without a sales consultant.  Pretty cool after being a past employee.  And it wasn't you who bought the car it was your girlfriend.  It was the car she wanted and was happy with the negotiations and price.  Otherwise I would assume she wouldn't have bought here. There are no bad feelings towards you here.  There were no bad words said about you. They were happy to see you come in. And if it's as you say it is, why would you come in? I'd be glad to talk with you about it.  Give me a call.  Mark, Marketing Manager.

I have come to this Portsmouth Toyota dealership many years to service my 2001 Solara, but my most recent experience was extremely frustrating and disappointing. I have an ABS (auto-brake system) false activation at slow speeds when coming to a stop with no indication of an ABS light. This is apparently a common ABS problem on many older vehicles and can usually be traced to toner ring cracks, broken teeth, or more likely, a bad speed sensor due to corrosion, debris, etc. I asked them to please trouble shoot my problem and try to find the faulty sensor - there are 4, one on each wheel. More than 2 hours and $119 later, they couldn’t even find the guilty party. They would not open the rear wheels because they are sealed components, and such action will likely cause bearings to break apart. They claimed that they “visually” examined the speed sensors and found associated rust, cracks, and especially metal filings on tip sensors. I asked how could they possibly see filings on the tip sensors on the front wheels without removing them. Their answer was that they didn’t because sensors would probably break apart and a new one would need to be installed. Their hunch was the forward left wheel sensor (air gap distance) but couldn’t be sure because their scanning tool was not capable of retrieving ABS problems on my 2001 Toyota Solara. It was too old a vehicle for their equipment. After consulting with a well respected mechanic, he opined that this seemed odd because Toyota should definitely have the equipment and should be the last resort for troubleshooting problems like this. I have an OBD-II compliant Toyota and they SHOULD ALWAYS have the ability to troubleshoot their own Toyotas! Otherwise, who can we turn to for expert Toyota knowledge? My mechanic did replace the left forward sensor on my direction but problem still exists. I should have taken his advice and obtained a better scan analysis from someone else before doing the work, so we could identify which wheel has the problem. My mechanic advised that we stop right now and not replace the remaining 3 sensors until we know for sure which one it is. He suggested I go to Precision Auto, to really find out where the problem is and then focus in on that sensor/wheel. I did so. Apt. is next week. Precision Auto is sure that we can find the problem on a drive test, by scanning wheel sensor speeds on their scanner software. That’s what I had hoped Toyota would have done for me in the first place. My mechanic returned the old sensor to me and it certainly did not break apart upon removal, despite Toyota’s warnings, and doesn’t really look damaged at all. Even the sensor tip looks good and still in tact. What I don’t understand is why Toyota did not clean off the filings with compressed air or wire brush if they really saw them and were accessible? That would seem to be an easy fix, a common sense thing to do while in there, and not all that time consuming. I’ve seen a number of modestly priced scanners online that a layman can buy for ABS diagnostics with Bluetooth capability to an iPad, and which have the capability of monitoring countless other systems on any brand of car going all the way back to 96. It’s unbelievable to me why Toyota doesn’t have this kind of basic equipment available. They couldn’t give me hardly any useful information to help isolate this problem, especially after paying them so much for a very cursory visual inspection, which didn’t even include better rear wheel analysis. In brief, they didn’t provide me with much direction to decide on my next course of action. I feel stuck - and envision a lot more money going down the drain before this problem is resolved. Not having diagnostic tools to scan for problems on an older Toyota is inexcusable. My mechanic replaced that left forward sensor for FAR, FAR LESS than the $330 plus that Toyota wanted for their sensor, plus 2 hours of labor, a job that would probably entail over $500 per wheel! If Toyota did work on all four sensors, that would come to $2000! I considered Toyota for my next new car but no more.
