Jennifer Allen is a pleasure to deal with. Very responsive and knowledgeable of all subjects. I want to thank her for all her hard work and for dealing with me. I highly recommend NECU for your financial needs.
Thank you for your review, Shane! ~Becca

Rachel Hayden, the Assistant Branch Manager at your Portsmouth Naval Shipyard branch, provided my wife and I the utmost in personal service going above and beyond with a loan application. Her knowledge, guidance, and responsiveness were simply outstanding, and completely exceeded our expectations! She represents NECU in thr best possible way, and we are once again pleased and proud to do business with your organization.
Thank you for your review, Dana! ~Jess

I had an auto loan through NECU and it was a nightmare. Several of the reviews mention problems with the technology, payment system, an overall feeling of security. These are important services that NECU has failed to keep up with, unfortunately. Due to the poor structure of the online services, I was unable to confirm a payment and it ended up going in late. Well, if you're late, the privilege of making online payments is taken away from you as punishment. I then had the joy of sending in a physical check every month for the next three years of the loan. NECU explained to me that it was their policy that the privilege of making online payments is removed if your direct deposit does not go through...ONCE! Due to COVID-19 insanity, online banking services have become essential. Having several different accounts, cards and loans, it has become pretty obvious which organizations are prepared for emphasized online banking and which are not. Since COVID-19, it would seem that NECU's site is completely unequipped to handle basic needs of support, put customers in contact with representatives, answer basic needs. And then there's the phone issue. Don't be fooled by their requisite "please excuse our long wait times due to unexpected call volume" message. In the five LONG, LONG years I have had a loan with these novices, the wait time was ALWAYS frustrating. The call volume is large. Online banking is important. Neither of these things are going to change now. Will NECU? I for one am not banking on it. YOU'VE BEEN WARNED!!! And to NECU: Don't bother to offer to chat for feedback. I've given you plenty and you've never valued my input. Our relationship is over, thank God!

We have been with them a while with not many problems. We had an issue with overdrafts on an old account we had forgotten about, and paypal kept attempting a withdraw. We eventually paid the balance and they sent us an account close letter, and have been told on the phone we are all good and the account would be closed. A couple weeks later we had some more payments default to this account causing major overdraft fees again despite being told the account was going to be closed, instead we are now told it can't be closed because its over drafted and that despite getting a letter it was just automated and means nothing... Also being told I am lying when I said I talked to a person as well saying the same thing. Needless to say we delayed paying it again as they shut off our online access, and found out the hard way that a bank account can destroy credit without a loan attached to the account. We are considering some options now I won't discuss. I would look to any other credit union, because this one is no better than a corporate monopoly, if not worse.
Hi Nicholas - This does not sound like the member service we aim to provide. Would you mind messaging us so we can look into this further? ~Jess

I had an auto loan with them since 2010 and have never been late. I bought a new car through a local dealership and was given a better rate with someone else. I just found out that NECU reported me 30 days late on my credit report, because the dealership didn't send them the payoff on time. When I called to discuss this, Shelly had absolutely no empathy for the situation and with an attitude told me there was nothing they would do to fix my credit report. Horrible customer service and treatment.

I am really surprised to read some of the negative reviews on this site. I have been a member of the credit union for almost 20 years and have had nothing but excellent service. My questions have always been answered responsibly pleasantly and promptly. I do most of my banking online. When I do come into a physical bank everybody is pleasant responsive and service is prompt.
Hi David - Thank you for being a loyal member and we're so glad to hear you've had a positive experience at NECU. ~Jess

It’s like NECU doesn’t want me for a customer I thought I’d transfer from BOA to a local banking experience but it’s almost impossible. The first attempt was a 12 minute phone call placed on hold just to get a woman in Michigan who couldn’t answer my questions specific to Portsmouth’s branch. My second attempt was a 20 phone call on-hold or waiting while the young man checked with manager for clarification. My third attempt was receiving the invalid error when trying to login to my online account. 3 strikes?
Hi Patty - I'm so sorry to hear this was your experience. This is not the service we aim to provide. Would you mind private messaging us your contact information? I'd like for a Member Services Representative to give you a call answer any questions and make sure everything is all set with your account including Online Banking. ~Jess

It is seriously long overdue that NECU parts way with what ever contractor handles their software/database management for their ATMs. I believe it may be First Data?? Yesterday yet again, I went to an ATM branch and the screen pad to make my section, did not work. Over the past five plus years, I've literally had about 20% of the time, a various ATM around the seacoast not function, be temporarily out of service, etc... . A few months ago, I was almost late for work, after I had to sit in the Portsmouth branch, while they reviewed cameras and had to correct the worst gaffe yet: I withdrew $500 from the ATM inside, and as I waited, the machine shutdown and re-set. Not only did I not get my money, when I immediately checked my account on-line, sure enough it had credited that money from my account nonetheless. Then I had to sit around waiting for them to fix the mistake for 20 minutes before I could get my money and the problem rectified. Enough. Its not worth the headaches, as this credit union has gone downhill on other fronts as well the past few years: parallels some of the other gripes I've read from other members recently: unresponsive customer service, nickeled and dimed at every turn for unjust fees, etc... Very obnoxious.

I used to love them. Then they charged me $32 for an overdraft because a check went through while there was a pending charge. I saw it happen, went and deposited the difference that same day, but they still charged me. Even Bank of America (AKA the devil) doesn’t charge an overdraft fee if it’s balanced out that same business day. They actually have a pending class action lawsuit for this exact practice. Shaheen Gordon in Dover or Concord represents the plaintiffs. I can’t get in on it because I have a conflict of interest with that firm, but I wish I had known about it when they waived the overflow fee “just this one time”. If I only get one waiver I would have liked to use it if I actually overdraft, which I never do. Service Credit Union charges like $9-$12 for overdraft. Santander is $9. Capital One doesn’t even charge you because they’ll give you a free line of credit in case that happens. Choose wisely.
