My mom, 80 years old, passed away on February 1, 2015. She had an account with the Portland Federal Credit Union in Portland, Michigan. It came to my attention that the Credit Union has charged $2201 in 2014 for $1951 in overdraft fees and $250 in returned item fees, most of them at $25 each time. All of these fees, except for $25 have been charged against her account since August of 2014. Then, in the last full month of her life, January 2015, and while she was in the hospital they charged her $375.00 in overdraft fees and one returned item fee. My brother, who is on the account, has authorized me to follow up on this. We had a grandson stealing her money and then hiding her statements. Mom had Social Security and retirement pensions refilling the account so each month it would start out in the black. Not one time did the credit union contact my mom by phone to see if there was a problem. I think this is outrageous and I would like to know if anyone else is having this problem with the Portland Federal Credit Union? They are refusing to zero out the account and they are trying to hold my brother accountable; who was put on the account several years ago to take care of mom's bills if she were to become unable to do so herself. They want him to pay the negative balance of around $1000. I talked to the Adjustment Department at the PFCU and they would take away some of the fees but not all of them. Since they won’t zero out the balance additional charges have been assessed against my mom’s accounts. The Grandson is still charging against the account. He is on the run from the law due to a number of felonies including out of compliance with his sex offender registry (Thomas Zachary Peters). We don’t know where he is. Sadly, he was the POA on this account. Since September of 2014, when Mom was found delusional by the Ingham County Probate Court, her accounts were supposed to be turned over to Tri County Conservator’s out of Lansing, MI. Isn’t there any type of regulation limiting the amount of fees that can be charged before the account is closed or the issue is addressed? Any help you can provide to get this taken care of would be appreciated.
