My husband and I have been living in our Keystone home for over a year now and we love it. We bought a home that was already completed and ready to move into quickly, which was perfect being that we needed to move on a quick timeline. Our neighborhood has tree-lined streets, sidewalks, the best neighbors and is located just off of 1-20 ,with an easy commute to my work in Augusta and to visit my family in Aiken! The things we love most about our home are: the yard size and landscaping (beautiful flower beds/plants), sprinklers and the HUGE master-bedroom and the garden tub in our master-bath! The home plan and neighborhood are perfect for our big family and has certainly made life much better/easier, especially during the pandemic, where our family spent a lot more time at home while our children were learning remotely. We would certainly recommend Keystone to our family and friends and would buy Keystone again in the future!

We recently built on our lot with keystone and are very happy with the finished product. We were able to do a lot from a design stand point to get our house how we envisioned. Throughout the process Steve Foss was great about answering all of our questions and keeping us informed. We are first time home builders so we asked a lot of questions and Steve always had time for a call or text to help explain things to us. I would recommend keystone and the build on your land program.

    Response from the owner

Thank you for your review. We're so glad that we could make your dream home, on your land, a reality. Steve Foss has been with us more than 10 years and has built many homes. He prides himself in being patient, responsive and thorough. We're lucky to have him! Thanks again for leaving us a positive review and for choosing us to build your home.

PLEASE READ ALL THE ONE STAR REVIEWS BEFORE BUYING!! You’ll notice a very common theme and my home was no different. This company will do anything to save themselves a buck and it’s at your expense. These homes are all finished by Keystone teams of unskilled laborers that don’t speak any English meaning that even when they do agree to fix an issue they send out the same unskilled team to repair it, often times creating more issues, and you cannot communicate the issues to them due to the language barrier. VERY FRUSTRATING!! There will be paint all over the floors, countertops and outlets. Not a straight paint line to be found throughout. It’s as if these homes were finished in the dark. Poor quality trim wood, doors that are falling off hinges and or painted and closed too soon. HVAC vents not properly affixed to the duct work causing lack of efficiency and excessive pests. Cracks in concrete from day one. It’s actually pathetic what they have done to this home by cutting all possible corners. Trust me and all the other ONE STAR reviews when we tell you to AVOID THIS BUILDER AT ALL COSTS!!

The builder decided 3 weeks before closing to increase the contract price because of the “price” of lumber. Lumber in a home that’s completely built and after the price of lumber has experienced a well known price decrease. So much has been unprofessional with this builder. From them cost and process of having to pay 100% of the cost upfront for upgrades, to not returning phone calls and e-mails without me following up on them, to them directly telling me they don’t do smooth ceilings cause it allows them to hide imperfections in there work Fortunately, buying a house is not an every year event because I would never buy another home from them.

    Response from the owner

Hello, thank you for your feedback. We’re sorry that you had a negative experience with Keystone. We never hope to have to invoke an escalation clause but if we must do so, the buyer has the right to cancel their agreement and not buy the home. We also have no record of invoking an escalation clause less than 30 days before closing. Lumber is only one component that determines the price/cost of your home and may account for approximately 20% of your home’s cost, while the other 80% is the cost of labor and other materials. Unfortunately, regardless of current lumber costs, there have been cost increases in almost all other areas. Lumber purchases also typically move from Wholesaler, to Reseller, to Keystone and takes time to work through the lumber companies inventory system. This means that price changes are not instantaneous. Currently our design studio policy is to allow our customers to add up to $5000 in upgrades without a deposit. All of our upgrades are optional. Textured ceilings is the standard in most of our homes, although we offer smooth ceilings as an upgrade option. The reason smooth ceilings are more costly is because it is more labor intensive. We pride ourselves in responsiveness and if this was not your experience, please provide us more information so that we can further investigate this. Again, we’re sorry that you’re unhappy with Keystone but appreciate your feedback.

EVEN ONE STAR IS TOO MANY!! If you’re thinking about buying a home built by Keystone - think again. Once the purchase is complete they are non responsive, everything wrong with the home is “cosmetic” which is their way of saying we will not fix it and the laborers they employ couldn’t paint a straight line if their life depended on it. They need to be advertising these homes as discount homes because that is exactly the type of craftsmanship you end up with. Very disappointed and I wouldn’t recommend my worst enemy buy this trash. Choose a different builder!

    Response from the owner

RD, We’re sorry we did not met your expectations, as we work hard to build a quality home and exceed homeowner expectations. When customers enter into an agreement with Keystone, the agreement is not ratified and accepted until all parties agree to the standards set forth by the QBW warranty. The QBW warranty includes a 1 year workmanship, 2 year systems and 10 year structural warranty, cosmetic items are excluded from warranty. These are not Keystone standards, but rather objective standards, that are agreed to and are common in the industry. The objective standard is not perfection. While Keystone does not and cannot build to perfection, we partner with excellent trades and conduct a homeowner Orientation before closing. The purpose of the Orientation is to educate our buyers on how to use their home to ensure they are satisfied with the home before they finalize their purchase. We would much rather cancel the sales and purchase agreement and allow you to find another home than purchase a home you are unsatisfied with. Thank you for your feedback as it continues to allow us the opportunity to improve our process and communication with our buyers.

Had a new home build. Overall process was straight forward and the provided a beautiful home for me and my family. I gave it a 4 star because of little things here and there that may or may not have been out of there control. this include but are not limited to didn't remove fixtures when painting ceiling, the sod laid doesn't cover the whole yard and the seed they lay is a different grass, didn't include all hardware for mounted lights in ceiling (they only put one bolt instead of 2), closing date was delayed. As stated these are minor inconveniences, and they built the house sturdy, quick, and it looks absolutely amazing. Wonderful job and beautiful product.

    Response from the owner

Hey Jonathan- Thank you for giving us a 4 star rating and choosing Keystone. We understand that buying a new home is a big investment and are honored that you chose to build with us. We also appreciate the comments you left and intend to pass those along to the appropriate Trade Partners in effort to better fine tune their processes. Thanks again and congratulations on your new home purchase!

There houses are OK, decent. Not perfect but OK. 4 stars for that. Warranty department needs serious work. Be better guys. Please be more responsive. Thanks. I have a roof issue in the queue I'm waiting to hear back from. 6/27/2020 Update: I am updating my review. I had a roof issue as previously said. I ended up getting some attention to get it fixed after posting here. The contractors they sent out did a good job. I want to say Carlos from Omega Construction (the roofing company Keystone contracts) was a pleasure to deal with and is very personable. His crew fixed the roof and the siding people slipped in mysteriously while I was working and fixed the siding around the return. Everything looks good. Chris scheduled the work and it seemed to be done w/ some urgency. Thanks guys. Upgrading review.

    Response from the owner

**UPDATE** Thanks Kevin, I'm glad everything is resolved, thanks for the update! Hey Kevin- As of the end of February, we've posted this notice on our website, under our customer care/warranty section to let prospects and buyers know how we intend to handle warranty concerns during the pandemic. This is also the auto response you should have received when you submitted your warranty repair request through our online system. "Due to current health concerns, Keystone will not address warranty issues except in case of emergencies. Examples of an emergency are total loss of water, power, heating and air conditioning, and water leaking into the home. Once the current health crisis is over Keystone will work diligently to address all outstanding warranty concerns." We received your repair request Saturday 5/30 and are not available over the weekend for non-emergency repair requests. We will begin addressing non-emergency requests beginning 7/1 and will be going in order of submittal to address any others who were submitted during the last few months, during the peak of the pandemic. Thank you for understanding and being patient with us as the safety of our trade partners and buyers has been our top priority!

I bought my home in the newer section of Granite Hill at the end of June 2020. Over the past two weeks after move in and during the buying process leading to, there have been a number of things that have been disappointing. 1. We had multiple issues trying to get answers about various questions that were time sensitive. We started the buying process when the house was close to completion, so when we would ask questions/see if we could add in features those things would obviously need a quick answer since the build process could continue on to a point that it was too late. We'd ask the agent something, he'd tell us he would ask whoever is in charge and immediately get back to us, and then we would have to remind him to ask. It got to the point where I asked to get the contact info for the builder and design studio and went to them myself because of the wasted time. 2. The information given about features of the home and things that were going to be done was inaccurate. - We were told the house was prewired for fiber. Upon being told this we responded "even for AT&T?" as this was our ISP and we were transferring, and the answer was "yes AT&T and Comcast." Which was incorrect. AT&T had to drill holes and lay wires. - We were told our back yard would be leveled, which it is not except for the first maybe 10-15 feet. - Our back yard didn't come with grass. Only the first 10-15 feet of our back yard is sodded (the section that was actually leveled), the rest is straw and seed up a steep incline. When we asked the agent about this we were told it was because the builder didn't have the budget to give us a full backyard of grass. At NO point in the buying process were we told about this, and throughout we were under the impression that the sod would be laid once the rest of the yard was leveled (but it was also never leveled). Had we'd known that sod is extra or the builder doesn't include grass with their homes we would've paid extra in the home price to get sod (we were $85,000 under budget) or just gone elsewhere, to some place where grass comes with the yards. 3. Our house was DIRTY in the walkthrough and at move in. - We popped in multiple times throughout the build process (bad idea) and it was less than clean but we assumed that it would get better as the house was finished. During our final walkthrough there was fecal matter on one of the toilets and urine stains on the other. There was a cigarette butt in the straw around the front yard (who smokes cigarettes in 2020?) and a box of trash in the attic. 4. After move in we are starting to notice a lot of cut corners. - There's stains on the walls, to include ones we pointed out at walkthrough, random splotches of grout/paint on cabinets and other random places and random stains on the floor. - There are a LOT of spiders/fruit flies/creepy crawly things that have clearly been living here longer than us. We find at least 5 everyday. We aren't sure if it's because the doors and garage were left open excessively during the build process or what, but we've never had an issue like this before. 5. In addition to the backyard not being graded, code is not being followed for the grading on the sides. - There is no french drain/tarp to the side of me, so my neighbor's yard is draining into mine improperly. There are puddles of mud seeping into my yard (puddle is understatement) So yeah these homes are okay, but that's about it. Like they're good enough to recommend to a coworker but not a family member. At first we wanted to work with them again to buy a couple rental properties but upon second thought we will not be doing so.

    Response from the owner

J C- We're sorry for not having met your expectations. It seems as if there may have been some confusion regarding grading and the elevation of the home-site you chose. Grading is engineered and approved for the entire section of the community before construction in the new section of the community begins. Once this is complete, individual home-sites are not altered to be any more flat as this may impact the drainage plans for the entire section of the community and even promote sitting water on your particular home-site. Elevation changes are necessary, at times, to allow the water to drain properly and to prevent sitting water. As for sod, the amount of sod on your home site is home-site specific. The amount of sod may appear to vary a bit from one home-site to the next for a couple of reasons- 1. the shape of the home-site and 2. because of the footprint of your particular plan. For example, a one-story ranch style plan, which is wider than the typical two-story plan, may have a smaller side setback, leaving less room for sod on the sides. In this case, you may see more sod in the rear as it has been allocated elsewhere. In this neighborhood it is standard to have a rear portion of the property that is not sodded, but instead seed and straw. It appears as if this may not have been communicated- and we're sorry if it wasn't. The good news is, you can always hire a landscaper to lay more sod just as you would have in our Design Studio, had you opted to add more before closing. Unfortunately, we do not operate off of oral agreements but what is negotiated and ultimately written into your sales agreement regarding upgrades, to include additional landscaping, among other upgrades. We do like to let our buyers know, when you're purchasing an under-construction home, that you may be more limited in the upgrade options you are able to select as construction on this home is already under-way. Often, even though upgrades have not yet been installed, they have already been selected, custom-built to fit the specific home you're purchasing and sometimes even delivered. We hope you understand and sincerely appreciate you leaving your review, because although unfortunate that we were unable to meet or exceed your expectations, your comments will allow us the opportunity to evaluate and improve our communication going forward. Thanks again, J.C.

Do not buy homes from this company!! Darren is rude and doesn’t care about you or your home. We moved in June 25. We have two kids and my parents here the first night. All go to shower, and we have no hot water. Took over a month for them to get someone to come look at it cause it wasn’t an emergency. Guy comes to look at it and states you had an electrician that didn’t know what he was doing. The repair man put in a new heating element cause the electrician that did the wiring turned on the hot water tank with no water in it. Also our front door the dead bolt did not line up so we were unable to lock our house safely. Put in a work order and took over a month to do a simple fix. I also tried using our outlet outside to do some yard work...guess what it doesn’t work. The outlet has no power! I put in a work order over a month ago and still not fixed. Then we went grocery shopping cause my parents are visiting so we plug in the refrigerator in the garage, and it runs for 20 seconds and trips the breaker and now we have no power in the garage. So pretty much in these houses you can’t use a refrigerator or freezer in the garage unless you hire an electrician to rewire it. Today is August 14th, I can only imagine what other issues we will have but I bet it will only get worse and Darren is terrible to deal with. You move into a brand new build, you should have no issues at all. These guys cut all the corners to save money. Run away and say no! They suck stay far away! If you don’t believe me I will send you my address and prove it to you!

    Response from the owner

Mr. Coon- Thank you taking the time to leave us your feedback. We always strive to meet, if not exceed, customer expectations and that did not happen here. We understand that buying a new home is a big investment and experiencing an issue with your home shortly after closing can be very frustrating. Despite longer than expected repair times, it seems as if, at this time, all of your repair requests have been resolved. If that is incorrect, please reach out to us via the following email address, [email protected], and we would be happy to assist you with your requests. As far as the issue you’ve been experiencing with the outlets in your garage, it sounds as if the refrigerator you’re using may require more power than can be supported with standard outlets. If before construction begins we are made aware that a buyer intends to use outlets in their home for heavy-duty appliances, we typically suggest that they consider upgrading their electrical package in our Design Studio in order to better accommodate their needs. If you purchased a completed home, unfortunately this may not have been an option for you. Again, we apologize for any inconveniences this may have caused you and appreciate you taking the time to leave us your feedback. This will assist us in improving our processes and communication in the future. Thank you.

The only saving grace of these builders is that they hired semi-competent subcontractors. The builder themselves failed to cross coordinate anything between the subs, which is the bare minimum expected. We moved into a brand new house and I wouldn't consider it actually a dwelling when we received it, climate control was broken, it didn't keep out water, and the septic had been destroyed. For example: 1.HVAC stack was put in after the roofers were done and no one sealed it, resulting in water pouring through the roof during rain, you could see daylight and blue sky around the stack looking up. (was covered under warranty, problem throughout the neighborhood) 2. Wrong size floor plan was given to HVAC installers causing them to put in 1/2 the size AC needed to cool the house, wouldn't cool below 80 on move in (covered under warranty) 3. Wrong size floor plan was given to county for tax purposes, I had to call and correct the floor plan in order to ensure no later back taxes and the zillow algorithm didn't short our zestimates 4. The landscapers were not aware of septic lines/line locations and trenched though them when putting in sprinkler lines. This was NOT obvious for about 3-4 years for most residents in the neighborhood as it takes awhile to collapse drainfields and back up the septic. NOT covered under warranty, Keystone told us it wasn't their problem. Thousands out of pocket for many residents for all new drainfield install plus fixing the sod/yard/sprinklers after the reinstall. This was a few years back, maybe they have improved. They DID put in some nice amenities like granite and on-demand water heaters. They were also the cheapest by a wide margin. There was just very little general contractor deconflicting with the subs and ensuring the house was actually a house.

    Response from the owner

Mr. Zany- We’re sorry to hear that we didn’t meet your expectations with your new home purchase and that it has caused you frustration. We do, however, want to thank you for taking the time to leave us your feedback. We are always looking to improve our processes in order to increase buyer satisfaction and your comments allow us the opportunity to do just that. During construction, every home undergoes several Keystone and jurisdictional inspections and a certificate of occupancy is not received until these inspections are completed and passed. This allows us to ensure that the home is ready for move-in and built to all jurisdictional standards in order to minimize any issues you, the buyer, may experience after move in. As far as our warranty process/requests, they are handled online through the Quality Builders Warranty (QBW) SOS system. Once submitted, the repair requests are sent directly to the trade partners (subcontractors) to be scheduled and addressed in conjunction with the QBW warranty terms and their schedules. Typically Keystone does not get involved in this process unless a warranty request has not been resolved. Please advise if you have any warrantable repair requests that have yet to be addressed and we would be happy to assist in a resolution. Again, we’re sorry that this turned out to be a frustrating process for you and hope that we can use your feedback to better communicate with an assist other buyers in the future. Thank you.
