I went to this credit union as a shared branch for my credit union to do a withdrawal in the amount of $11,000. From the moment I walked into the door the teller Maria was not helpful and had a bad attitude, she didn’t seem like she actually Wanted to help me. She quickly let me know that the $11,000 withdrawal probably would not be accepted because “my bank has limits”. I continued to filled out the necessary paperwork and she said “your bank declined the withdrawal because it was over the limit” so I asked her what are the limits and she said “I don’t know you have to call you bank”. Once I got in the car I called my branch and was told not only did they not have limits on withdrawals there was nothing in my account that would have limited the amount of money I took out. So at that point I called the customer service number for Great Lakes and the teller called the branch and was told that in fact THEIR branch had a limit of $10,000 withdrawal, but that isn’t what Maria told me. Maria blamed it on my bank, and told me she couldn’t tell me what the limit for withdrawals were because it wasn’t them who made the decision. If she told me $10,000 was the limit I would have had no issue taking that since I only needed $11,000. I’m really not trying to assume this is a race thing, but being a African American woman I find it very strange that she not only lied to me about the limits but she lied about who had the limit and placed the blame on my own bank. This type of behavior is not only infuriating but in 2022 it is disgusting. I will never go to this branch again, and recommend anyone else to avoid them as well.

I am having a hard time banking with Great lakes, and I keep running into issues that are the credit unions fault. For the first 6 months I couldn't make a mobile deposit, while during covid you would think the option to go into the bank what actually be unavailable but I had to go into the bank to deposit my check from work. But not before I have to go to a currency exchange to cash it first. My last work check that I was finally able to Mobile deposit bounce back because of skewed imagery, when I didn't have a problem with the checks before that I was finally able to deposit. I keep having to call the bank about fees they wrongfully add to my account. customer service takes care of it pretty good from my personal experience but I shouldn't have to keep calling the bank. It doesn't seem like whatever system they use is working. Closing my account and going elsewhere.

I wish there was an option to not select a star. great lakes credit union is a solid organization to do business with until something goes wrong. If that happens good luck because you'll need it. I had one issue with glcu and their support and willingness to help was non existent. Once I realized this, I closed my account and went to a competitor. The competitor said my experience was not uncommon and that 3-5 come over each month from them with similar stories. I recommend that you take your business elsewhere.

GLCU bought out my much smaller credit union in the city, and I was initially really excited for the GLCU takeover. Boy was I wrong. I didn’t get a new debit card in time and my personal information was all incorrect, so to access my funds, I had to take off work and go to the branch to verify my info and get my card. I got there, waited awhile, and finally start to get things straightened out. I waited quite some time for my card, only to find out the machine was broken. GLCU did Offer to FedEx me a card, but that left me without access to my funds and made it such that I had to wait for my card to be delivered all day. While I was at the branch, I asked for a printout of my banking details so I could migrate my direct deposit information, and was given a printout. Unfortunately, the printout they gave me was for my savings account, which led to some issues with an auto withdraw I had set up. After getting all that straightened out, I started getting charged random fees on my account. I contacted GLCU and they told me that was a carryover from my previous credit union, but I never paid any account fees there. After I asked for documentation showing I had the type of account GLCU claimed I had, they were able to find their error and correct it. In addition to these issues, I had trouble with mobile deposit, the app and the website. The folks answering the phone provided some of the worst customer service experiences I’ve ever had in my life. All in all, I stuck it out with GLCU for about a year I think, and decided to close my account as I don’t think my banking arrangement should be something that causes stress in my life. Leaving GLCU was a great decision and I absolutely would not recommend anyone bank there.

This is the absolute worst company I have ever dealt with for anything. I finished paying off my loan in January and have been fighting to get my title since. Over 5 phone calls with different people and countless emails and I just now find out I have to go to the DMV to get it because they dont actually send it to you. Had a lot of payments go missing and had to fight them to get it back, turns out they put it in someone elses account and then charged me 30 dollars to get it put back into mine. This place feels like a scam avoid it at all costs.

I have been with this credit union for almost 7 years now. I was introduced through my job. I have enjoyed them greatly. I do not have any complaints. The service is warming, they get to know you as a person. I enjoy the classes they offer as well as the hot and cold funds around the holidays. If you are a person that want to rebuild your credit, they have a few options to help with that as well. You can also have money taken directly from your check to put into a savings... I love this option because I can save money with every pay date. Thanks for great service.

0 Stars! I have been a member of McHenry County Schools Federal Credit Union since 1991. Since merging to Great Lakes it has gone nowhere but downhill. Customer service in the phone center is absolutely awful. I was lied to on several occasions. There was also lying from the management level. They made a huge mistake with my credit card and change of address. This resulted in a hit on my report while in the middle of a home purchase. They have proven to me that they cannot handle the simplest of banking tasks. I do not reccomend banking with this institution.

This was my first time using a credit union and it will be my last. I had a loan put into my account and I went to make a withdraw I had both forms of ID, I was kept at the window for about 25-30 mins after I told them I wanted to withdraw a certain amount. Then, I was called into the back to verify my identity after that was already done at the front window I took it as if they felt like someone as young as me shouldn’t have this amount of money in there account, the fraud department called harassing me asking me all these personal questions! All because I couldn’t remember which email and phone number I had associated with my account because I have several! Like really! After speaking with the lady I was told my account has been froze and it’s been two weeks and I hadn’t received any paperwork from them nor did anyone call me so I decided to call today and I was told they can’t speak with me about my account over the phone I have to come in AGAIN! Last time I stayed in there office for about an hour an a half. I believe it’s because of my skin color so I will try a different branch tomorrow this one isn’t recommended! JUST A WASTE OF TIME MAK ES A PERSON OF COLOR VERY UNCOMFORTABLE! Update: I still haven’t received what I need from this company and that is a proof of my account being closed I keep getting the run around & when I went into a branch to close my account I spoke with a manager & was told she would put a request in and when I called the customer service number I was told they didn’t see a request. They like to play mind games I will her lawyer involved soon if they don’t get it together. I know my rights! Everyone else send you something in the mail letting you know your account has been closed. What a mess!

Better than big banks. There's a range of services u can take advantage of, from small loans to rebuilding your credit to low interest credit cards to free checking and so much more. It's worth it to check them out. You won't be sorry.

I have had a savings account there for years and I don’t see any perks. 1) It is very hard for me to actually talk to someone. The menu comes on and the call transfers but they don’t answer or they pick up then hang up more often than not. Some employees respond better to emails, some don’t. They respond quickly to the emails from the website but it’s hard to login unless you have your account info in front of you. 2) I got an auto loan through them, but they were only .25% lower than the competitors offer and I had issues with them not pulling my auto pay (and telling me I was at risk of having my car shut off) twice the first year. They also initially wouldn’t backdate payments they took out late, a big NO NO. Also, if I want to make extra payments, I have to contact the CU and schedule it through a person manually applying the payment. 3) I attended a credit/home buying consultation and the guy gave me misinformation on the home buying and not much help on the credit part. I found that out when I want to the home buying seminar they told me to go to. 4) I most recently requested a debt consolidation loan for credit cards (I requested 10k) bc my credit card utilization brought my score down significantly. This was suggested by my mortgage lender who pre-approved a mortgage, but used a tool that showed that if my credit card debt was transferred to a personal loan, my score could increase by 80 pts and I could get a better interest rate. I applied through the credit unions website at a cost of $30. They only use TransUnion (which was my lowest score-50 pts less than my highest) so instead of being considered on the credit score spectrum (like they do for mortgages), I was stuck w the lower score. Then I got an email saying they could only approve me up to $3k (!!!!!) bc of my low credit score. Circular logic: we won’t give you a personal loan to improve your credit score bc your credit score is too low. I was also given a lengthy list of items to submit to continue the loan approval process. 5) The very next day, I ended up getting a loan for the full $10k at a reasonable rate over 3 years at a competitor (I had multiple offers) who had the funds to me within a week. No prepayment penalties and they did their own legwork of calling to verify the info I put on the application instead of asking me to gather the various paperwork. And I can make extra payments any time I want as needed. 6) I always get mail from a 3rd party through them trying to sell me all different kinds of insurance that I don’t need and can’t seem to opt out of. 7) The only good thing I have to say is that Maria Montoya is pretty helpful. She has limitations on what she can do due to policy, but she tries to help and is the most consistent with communication. As soon as I finish the home buying process I’m refinancing my car and closing my account there. Idk what they do for the community, but they haven’t done much for me.
